GERD

GERD Q & A in Manhattan & New York, NY

What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is when the valve at the top of your stomach allows a backflow (or reflux) of acid into the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach (esophagus). This results in an intense burning sensation in your chest and may extend all the to the back of your throat.

This condition is commonly referred to as heartburn. In the long-term, this acid can affect the lining of your esophagus because it is not designed to withstand repeated exposure to stomach acid. This can lead to the development of ulcers or even cancer of the esophogus.

What are the symptoms of GERD?

Usually, GERD is diagnosed if this reflex happens more than twice in a week. Severe cases of GERD are when this happens 1-2 times a day.

Along with the frequent burning sensation in your chest or the back of your throat, you may experience:

  • Breathing difficulties
  • Worsening of asthma
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • A sense of a lump in your throat
  • A chronic cough
  • A chronically scratchy throat

What are ways I can treat GERD?

Dr. Rubin will likely begin your treatment plan with some simple lifestyle changes. Often GERD can be treated or greatly improved using a few simple steps for helping healthy digestion of your food.

  • Maintain a healthy weight (obesity is a risk factor for GERD)
  • Eating smaller meals
  • Avoid late night meals
  • Elevate your chest and head while sleeping, especially right after eating
  • Taking over-the-counter antacids after a meal

What if these simple changes do not help my GERD?

If your GERD does not improve within a few weeks, Dr. Rubin may suggest the need to do some diagnostic testing to see the cause of your reflux. These tests may include:

  • X-rays to see if there are any abnormalities of the esophagus or stomach
  • Endoscopy: using a flexible tube with a camera placed down your esophagus, he can visualize the length of your gastroesophageal tract

Depending on the results of these diagnostic studies, Dr. Rubin will work with you to formulate a plan of care that is specific to you. Using his 30 years of experience with gastric disorders, he is well-qualified to diagnosis and treat your GERD, whatever the cause.
