Endoscopy vs. Colonoscopy: Understanding the Differences in Diagnostic Procedures

Leading Gastroenterology Center in New York City

Dr. Moshe Rubin directs the Consultative Gastroenterology & Endoscopy center in Manhattan & New York, where our doctor and highly professional staff perform your endoscopy/colonoscopy and believe in ongoing education/learning about all the new trends in digestive procedures to enhance GI health/wellness.

Our doctor is here to explain the differences between two endoscopies and a colonoscopy. All three procedures require us to give you a light IV sedative. You will be in twilight sleep/comfortable/and pain-free during your procedure, including possible on-the-spot treatment for some conditions such as polyp removal.

Double Balloon Examination versus an Upper GI Examination

In the past, doctors could not clearly see the small intestine. Now, this is made possible with the double balloon procedure. This 30-to 90-minute procedure also allows the doctor to biopsy tissue/remove polyps/and dilate constrictive areas in the intestine.

Consultative Gastroenterology & Endoscopy in Manhattan & New York explains that double-balloon endoscopies give our doctor a clear view of the inside of the small intestine.

Our state-of-the-art tools for this procedure allow our doctor to obtain a biopsy and perform an electrocauterization. These procedures help our doctor arrive at the correct diagnosis and treat conditions found in the esophagus/stomach/duodenum/and colon.

The tools for this procedure require a 200 cm long flexible tube. This tube has a microscopic camera, light, and a small medical balloon over a secondary balloon guided through your intestines.

The second balloon inflates, while the first proceeds through the intestine, giving the doctor a clearer view of the intestinal tract to find and diagnose polyps/tumors/AVMs/bleeding/iron deficiency anemia/foreign bodies/other abnormal conditions.

Upper GI Examination

This procedure uncovers any gastric conditions through the use of a flexible tube attached to a microscopic camera. This tube, inserted through the mouth, extends through the esophagus and upper GI tract.

It is now possible for the doctor to examine/diagnose/and possibly treat esophagus/stomach/duodenum/and upper GI issues such as,

  • GI bleeding
  • Gastritis
  • Hiatal hernia
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Cancer/upper GI tract
  • Severe GERD

What Is a Colonoscopy?

This procedure lets our doctor view your large intestine and colon through a long flexible tube with an attached microscopic camera. The tube is inserted through the rectum while lying on your left side.

This procedure finds colon issues that need treatment, such as colon cancer/polyps/gastrointestinal bleeding/and other GI issues.
